What I’m Watching: Emily in Paris (Season Finale)

Emily in Paris: Season 3, Episode 10 “Charade” (B)

Well, this does not play out exactly as I had expected it would. Camille dismissed Emily’s concerns about her fling with Sofia as meaningless when Emily was well aware that she was talking on the phone to her after seeing them fighting at the restaurant, but then she went ahead and torpedoed her wedding during the ceremony because she saw Gabriel kissing Emily’s hand. The speed at which things move on this show is at times quite hard to believe, like how Luc just happened to have an ex-girlfriend who is quite unpleasant and who had broken up with him because he spilled the beans to everyone he met that she was involved in the Michelin star process. The fact that Gabriel wasn’t even present at the restaurant when she came back to eat again and the grandmother who loved Gabriel so much but hated Camille was cooking instead of being at their engagement party didn’t exactly track, and Nicholas and Mindy helicoptering in so they wouldn’t miss the party was much more distracting than heroic since they could have just been on time. Benoît was thrilled about Eurovision but may not mind that Mindy moved on to be with Nicholas so quickly, and the very busy rich man did manage to make peace with Emily. But everything fell apart thanks to Camille’s mid-wedding announcement, which was enough to make Alfie instantly abandon Emily despite having no inkling of their relationship before that. Gabriel revealing that Camille is pregnant most definitely complicates things. Julien planning his exit and Sylvie navigating her own personal-business conflicts should be major plot points in the start of season four, something I’ll plan to watch since this show offers some consistently entertaining if far from believable entertainment.

What I’m Watching: Emily in Paris

Emily in Paris: Season 3, Episode 9 “Love is in the Air” (B)

It did not take Gabriel long at all to go from drunkenly confessing his feelings for Emily to deciding that he wanted to propose to Camille, something that she managed to do before him, resulting in a sweet but low-key engagement that caught Emily by surprise. Accompanying Gabriel to look at proposal venues while she was feeling like Alfie wasn’t actually invested in their relationship threatened to cause some serious issues, but now she and Alfie seem to be in very good shape, and it’s just a question of whether she’ll confront Camille about her tryst with Sophia or spill the beans to Gabriel. The bigger problem is that Nicholas is upset that Emily embarrassed him in front of his family and is intent on cutting her out of Mindy’s life, something that will absolutely be an obstacle to that budding relationship provided it doesn’t come out in the wrong way that instead finds Mindy turning her back on her best friend rather than her new boyfriend. It was sad that Luc didn’t get to go to the opera, but at least Sylvie got a win when Laurent showed up to be there with her, suggesting happy relationships for just about everyone, even if there are some sincere red flags in a few of them. During that meeting when Emily just completely changed things following Gabriel’s phone call, Julien seemed hurt and furious, and I have a feeling that he’s going to be leaving the agency soon since he can’t stand constantly being sidelined by her.

Emily in Paris: Season 3, Episode 8 “Fashion Victim” (B)

I had a feeling when this episode started that Pierre wasn’t actually dead but instead in some other state, which turned out to be the case when he was shown gleefully living it up in rehab with only a broken collarbone. Keeping the truth from him didn’t seem like a great idea since he was bound to find out some other way, but I appreciate that this whole thing didn’t play out as I expected it would. Sylvie tried to go around Nicholas by approaching his father to convince his son to delay Grégory’s appointment until Pierre was doing better, something she did forcefully by reminding him of the context in which they used to know each other. Nicholas was upset by that and emboldened to act anyway, and the way in which Emily and Sylvie teamed up to manufacture rumors of Pierre’s death so that he can return defiantly and reclaim his brand was enough to make Nicholas unwilling to work with them again. Mindy is kidding herself if she thinks that Nicholas and Emily not getting along professionally isn’t going to impact their personal relationship, though she also received a somewhat steely reception from Nicholas’ father that made mention right away of her own famous parent. Gabriel getting drunk and saying that he couldn’t help falling in love with Emily the moment he met her was definitely an overshare, and even though he now seems happy with Camille following her return from Greece, there’s no way Emily’s going to be able to let that go. Also, I feel like it’s impossible that 26 euros would be a strain when she spends so much on her outfits.

Emily in Paris: Season 3, Episode 7 “How to Lose a Designer in 10 Days” (B)

So it appears that Camille did go to Greece with Sophia, but we didn’t check in with them to see what’s going on, and instead are left with Emily and Gabriel once again matched up while Alfie was also away in London visiting his family. That made for my favorite scene of the episode, when the woman sitting next to Gabriel hit on him and then indulged fully in what she thought was roleplay which made Gabriel uncomfortable enough to get up and leave. They had a great time together at that balloon exhibit, and pointing out that they should invite their significant others for a real double date as soon as they got back felt like a necessary reminder that they are both otherwise entangled even if they’re still a better fit to be together. Mindy wasn’t sure if Nicholas was asking her on a date or not, but showing up in the rejected outfit Grégory had designed for AirFrance sent a clear message, and he only acted on it after everyone else had left and she outright asked him. Like Alfie, he’s all about work, so that romance may take some time to build. But a productive intervention with Pierre turned into him getting cut out of his own company while Agence Grateau profited from some new business, though that may change if Pierre survives the unfortunate accident that has just befallen him and produced an almost comical set of gasps from those watching in horror from the table.

Emily in Paris: Season 3, Episode 6 “Ex-en-Provence” (B)

The incestuous relationships on this show do seem to come in handy since a career-ending development for the newly-formed Agence Grateau was averted within seconds because Emily’s CFO boyfriend was working for the man Sylvie was previously having an affair with, who had just the place that he would obviously be willing to let them use for the big event. That wasn’t the end of it, of course, since Laurent showing up as an invited guest to the event was the last straw for Eric, who probably made the right decision in leaving since Sylvie and Laurent were quite cozy and happy together within hours of him having departed. Things have been going well enough with Emily and Alfie that her forced Michelin dining experience with Gabriel is introducing old ideas that neither of them have been thinking about, even though they should be given that Camille is back in Paris actively contemplating extending her affair with Sophia after making it clear that she does love Gabriel. I can’t imagine that even the affable chef who can’t fathom that his kids wouldn’t like his cooking would be okay with her fulfilling her needs in a different way since he’s not all that available. It’s going to ultimately affect Emily’s relationship with Alfie more since she’s deliberately withholding from him starting with the receipt, making something out of nothing that’s going to bring him down from the high he’s currently on after driving that insanely fancy car back to Paris at top speed on those winding country roads.

Emily in Paris: Season 3, Episode 5 “Ooo La La Liste” (B-)

When we found out that Janine, the impossible-to-contact tastemaking journalist who Emily instantly realized was one of her followers, was Australian, I thought that she was going to end up only liking Emily and being put off by Sylvie’s constant condescension about how she’s not French and not serious. While it was true that Emily got the cover and Sylvie didn’t even end up making the list, that had more to do with Sylvie not being a newcomer, and she still got a write-up in the style section about her new company. That Gabriel also made the list was yet another sign of how these people don’t have real problems, and they’re able to become instantly famous with minimal effort time and time again. Similarly, of course Mindy knows Nicholas from boarding school, and the fact that he wanted to buy the love song Benoit wrote for her and was intent on asking her out even though she knew he had a boyfriend was enough to drive Benoit away, not even willing to stay on stage for the thunderous round of applause following their French performance of “Shallow.” Camille couldn’t resist the much more open advances of Sophia that she had hinted at during their last encounter, and of course Emily would be the one to see them when they were publicly making out on the rooftop. Bringing Sophia to meet Gabriel and then playing footsie under the table feels much worse than just sneaking around, and we’ll see how long that stays secret.

Emily in Paris: Season 3, Episode 4 “Live from Paris, It’s Emily Cooper” (B)

I’m glad that Emily being a waitress in France, where the customer most definitely is not right, didn’t last very long. As is typically the case, Emily got off pretty much without consequences, almost killing someone because she thought “champignons” meant “champagne” and not mushrooms, but that’s the way things seem to work for someone who’s able to quit her job in a foreign country and spend all of her time on lavish leisure activities. She was even able to pass along the deck she had made for the pet filter to Luc and Julien, who were kind enough to give her credit to their unamused boss Sylvie, who was under the impression that Emily was back in Chicago. Camille’s mother acted swiftly to ensure that Emily wouldn’t be spending all that much alone time with Gabriel, but that came at exactly the same time as, completely unsolicited, Camille’s client Sofia planted the idea of their being a passionate romance between the two of them. Knowing that Camille feels bad for breaking the pact she made with Emily means that Camille should try being honest now with Emily ahead of time so that whatever happens with Sofia doesn’t come back to haunt her. This relationship dynamic truly is puzzling since everyone’s moving on so quickly with new partners, and those who are happily coupled don’t seem to be doing a great job of maintaining a great work-life balance, thanks in no small part to picnics and ferris wheel sex during the day.

Emily in Paris: Season 3, Episode 3 “Coo D'état” (B)

I thought that Emily was going to be pulled between the two competing companies for the entirety of the season, but instead it looks like Madeline is headed home right away. Fortunately, they were able to part ways on a good note, with Madeline genuinely happy for Emily as she was quite relieved to be going home following Henri turning up the heat and setting the bird loose in the office. Sylvie was all about manipulating Henri to get what she wanted and then telling him they had to keep things professional, and she got exactly what she wanted, back into an office that was just as she left it aside from Madeline’s giant purple water bottle that she promptly dropped right in the trash. Luc expressly said that something was missing, and now Emily is staying in Paris without a job and will almost doubtless return to Sylvie’s agency within a very short time. It’s also possible that she could end up becoming a different kind of competitor, working for one of the many people she’s become close with and might complicate the nature of their relationships even more. Alfie was eager to help Gabriel keep things vibrant with Camille and didn’t mind showing Emily what he had done, which suggests that she’s really moved on from Gabriel, which happened quite fast. Mindy did find a solution for the stage fright she felt when she had to perform alone, and Benoît even figured a way to make sure that his not being able to be there didn’t change her established routine at all.

Emily in Paris: Season 3, Episode 2 “What’s It All About” (B)

Things are actually looking up on all fronts, which is not what I would have predicted based on the way the previous episode ended. Madeline took Emily back without being too upset, under the circumstances, about her quitting without telling her, and Luc managed to be helpful again, this time on purpose, in attempting to matchmake their two bosses back together. Madeline might be willing to humble herself in the spirit of cooperation and because she realizes there’s no other choice, but Sylvie won’t, and Madeline showing up in the same exact dress didn’t help matters at all. Antoine expressing that he would be happy to have his lawyers fight to be able to continue working with Sylvie was an intriguing development, but now she has her own competing offer of exclusivity that’s going to complicate things even more. The disappointment Luc and Julien expressed at her not having consulted them shows that they are undyingly loyal, which will surely benefit her in this new rocky environment. Alfie taking a job that kept him in Paris without telling Emily and instead keeping her best friends sworn to secrecy was bold and not terribly kind, and for her to have to suck up to him at the end of the episode with a musical performance didn’t quite feel right. Even Mindy’s fortunes are looking up now that her bandmates have accepted the solo job for her because they believe in her. Could things be going well in Paris for just about everyone?

What I’m Watching: Emily in Paris (Season Premiere)

Emily in Paris: Season 3, Episode 1 “I Have Two Lovers” (B)

I’ve enjoyed watching this show, a series I’ve always said isn’t nearly as bad as most people say it is. It is easy, however, to detest Emily in this first episode since she does such a remarkable job of being irresponsible. Coming in to work and not telling Madeline that she had quit was her first mistake, and then showing up to the new operation headed by Sylvie with a similar lack of transparency just made it much worse. It served Luc right for coming in to his old office to casually collect his laptop that Madeline interrogated him and he just offered up all the information she needed to come crash the big McBaguette meeting. I’m curious what kind of partnership McDonald’s has with this show since this episode was all about the advertising. Alfie leaving while Emily was pulling double duty means she’s now without two boyfriends and two jobs, though I suppose Gabriel isn’t completely out of the picture. Camille claiming that she was loyal to Emily was a questionable statement, but she does seem to believe she’s won and therefore won’t be vindictive anymore towards her friend whose boyfriend she cleverly stole back. Mindy has her own choice to make as her career might be taking off without her bandmates, and though that puts her in a difficult position, she’ll probably do a slightly better job handling the potential fallout than Emily has done so far, but I guess neat, clean choices don’t make for entertaining TV.

Emily in Paris: Season 2, Episode 10 “French Revolution” (B)

I’ve never been all that interested in the artistic expressions of some of the artists that Savoir represents as clients, and the feud between Grégory and Pierre that played out on the performance stage was the latest instance of that. What was more significant, however, was Pierre firing Savoir because he didn’t appreciate the new steps taken by the team, which of course fell squarely on Madeline because she overrode Sylvie when she said it wasn’t a good idea. That was evidently part of a larger plan, and having the three French employees quit was a dramatic moment that left Emily feeling very alone and shell-shocked. Sylvie calling her to ask if she wanted to have lunch presented a great job opportunity, humorously repeating her earlier line that it was nothing personal since she still doesn’t like Emily but is open to working with her. Emily was never supposed to stay in Paris but now she has an interesting option for the future, though Madeline isn’t likely to be happy about it if she’s now running an empty office all on her own, and theoretically Emily could be in a more senior position once she hires a new staff if she stuck with her. Thinking about long-distance with Alfie seems a bit premature, and the bigger issue is that, if Emily stays in Paris, she’s going to be too close to Gabriel and his newly reinstated relationship with Camille. Her manipulating the situation so that she could get back together with Gabriel while Emily was the only one respecting the deal that they made is no surprise, and I wonder how long it will take for Emily to finish saying what she was about to before she saw Camille inside. I’ve enjoyed this show’s second run and hope that there will be more in the future since it really is singularly light and entertaining television.

What I’m Watching: Emily in Paris

Emily in Paris: Season 2, Episode 9 “Scents and Sensibility” (B)

Camille may have clarified right away to Alfie that she and Gabriel weren’t together, but going with Emily to cheer the boys on sure seemed like she was rooting for her boyfriend. It does seem that Alfie and Emily might last, even if the stability of their newfound relationship was nearly undone by Luc blabbing to Alfie about the Gabriel drama. Pretending to suddenly not be able to speak English when he realized what he had said was humorous and very much not effective. My prediction about Madeline becoming a more visible presence has already come true, and not telling Sylvie or Emily that she was coming was only the start of a rocky landing. Emily didn’t learn much about the culture she was coming to and ruffled plenty of feathers, but she has no real power aside from her social media accounts that reach the right people. Madeline, on the other hand, is the boss, and sitting on an exercise ball at Sylvie’s desk cemented that she very much saw their dynamic that way. Talking to Antoine at the event was bold, and it was the typically silent Catherine who clued her in to the potential consequences of charging him more now that his affair with Sylvie is over, as well as Sylvie’s current relationship with Erik. I definitely see Sylvie getting fired or possibly demoted and Emily getting more responsibility, which is not going to go over well. While Benoit reacted very poorly to the news of Mindy’s heiress past, he seems to have come around to it and expressed sincere feelings for her in song, whether or not that means they’ll be able to continue dating or play together.

Emily in Paris: Season 2, Episode 8 “Champagne Problems” (B-)

This episode was substantially lighter than most of the other installments of this show, which is saying something. I thought that Camille’s father was going to embarrass himself and everyone by trying to open the bottle with his penis or something like that, but Emily suddenly not knowing how to use her phone felt like an unbelievable device to make it so that he would slice off his finger in the third take. And it can’t even be boiled down to a master plan of her family’s to get Camille and Gabriel back together since Camille missed the call from Gabriel and her mother was the one who invited him to come up to check on him. Either way, Emily shouldn’t be all that upset since Camille and Gabriel were together and she was the one who slept with him knowing that – though Gabriel should also be held to account – and, more importantly, she’s actively involved in a relationship with someone else. Alfie seems a bit clueless about Emily’s obvious romantic history with Gabriel, and his efforts to ply him with food so that he wouldn’t be able to enjoy a wild night with Emily. That said, I certainly wouldn’t have turned down those abundant portions of delicious-looking meat. When it comes to relationships that might be somewhat taboo or looked down on, all it took for Sylvie to commit fully to being with Erik was Antoine telling her that she looked ridiculous with him, and that waitress was in for quite the shock when she went for it and made out with the man she thought was her son.

Emily in Paris: Season 2, Episode 7 “The Cook, the Thief, Her Ghost and His Lover” (B)

Hot temperatures are certainly equivalent on this show to sexual tension building, though there wasn’t quite as much sex or flirtation in this episode as in the one before it. Benoit was not at all concerned about Mindy’s falafel breath, and they’re evidently going down that path even though it might damage their professional relationship, though Mindy is worried that her celebrity identity could tank their romance first. After not being nice to her, Alfie managed to entice Emily with his terrible French and the fact that he had air conditioning in his apartment, and the only real obstacle to them getting together was him not being able to undo her shirt. She sent him a lot of messages the next day when she was convinced that he was ghosting her, and the news that he wasn’t unfortunately came along with Gabriel learning about their newfound relationship, which hurt him given the pretense Emily had made up about why they couldn’t be together. Running into him moments earlier wearing Alfie’s jacket was awkward, but now he’s going to either be mad at her or try to win her back, which is not going to help her deal with Camille. I was surprised to see Kate Walsh back as Madeline since I had forgotten her role in this show’s pilot, and I’m curious if this now means she might decide to move to France and play a bigger part in season three. Sylvie deciding that the firm wasn’t going to promote the very American Pelotech bike was an unexpected move, but not quite as much as her taking the bike home so that she could use it on her own.

Emily in Paris: Season 2, Episode 6 “Boiling Point” (B+)

As Emily and Camille both sort of honor their deal not to be with Gabriel, everyone else was getting some action in a way that was most definitely affecting their work. Mindy’s romance with Benoit has the potential to be the most problematic since the two of them are doing duets that have become their livelihood, and if it gets messy, they’re not going to be working together anymore. Sylvie thought that she was going to ruin her relationship with a much younger man, but he took the news much better than she did when Vespa called and delivered the news that made her quite irate. Julien could use a win after the disappointment of Benoit’s heterosexuality, but he’s started out with very high expectations on Gerhardt’s part. It was quite amusing when both Camille and Emily said “of course” when Gabriel expressed that he was glad that they were there, and they do make a good team, even if Camille was bending the rules in her extensive flirtation with Gabriel that had Emily raising her eyebrows. As she was having all this business success and even helping Antoine find a way to continue working with Gabriel, Emily was distracted by Alfie telling her that she wasn’t fun. It was quite irresponsible for her to just hop on the Vespa and ride it to French class, but she made her point and impressed him when she saw him on the side of the road and suggested that he hop on.

Emily in Paris: Season 2, Episode 5 “An Englishman in Paris” (B)

So much for Emily finding a better influence in her French class. Just because her new partner spoke English didn’t mean he was taking things seriously, and it’s possible that Emily would feel more comfortable in places that don’t feel French even if it’s not so good for her adjustment to the Parisian lifestyle. It was incredibly awkward to see just how enthusiastic and warm Camille’s parents were when they saw Gabriel, mainly because they had no idea that they weren’t together at the moment and that Emily was partially responsible for them splitting up. Camille’s mom wasn’t shocked when she did learn that information, and her plan for Camille to get Gabriel back makes it very possible for Emily to screw up. Making out in the restaurant after they were flirting shows that their feelings are very much still there for each other, and it’s almost as if Camille’s mom has set a test that Emily is sure to fail. Angry Camille is definitely scary, and I’m sure she’ll return before the end of the season. It’s strange that Julien and Mindy haven’t met yet since I feel like they would very much see eye-to-eye on things, though Mindy got it wrong when she introduced Julien to her bandmate who was very much straight and more attracted to her than she was to him. Other than that, she seems to be doing pretty well for himself in her newfound passion, even if she’s still not legally allowed to work in France.

Emily in Paris: Season 2, Episode 4 “Jules and Em” (B+)

It seemed far too easy that Emily would have already been able to sit down and get Camille to be open enough to listen to her. For as much as Camille has gone out of her way to be extremely friendly to Emily at every opportunity, she now seems unamused at all of Emily’s quirks and the fact that she has made no effort whatsoever to learn the language. Insisting that the meeting be held in French was harsh, and, while Emily’s gesture of writing a letter in French seemed well-intentioned to me, Camille wasn’t at all impressed, and calling her an illiterate sociopath suggests that there’s not much hope left there. Gabriel saying that he can’t honestly say that sleeping with her didn’t mean anything to him also complicates matters, and there’s no way Emily should pursue that, even if Camille is intent on never speaking to her again. For as much as Emily isn’t great at French, she does know that shoplifting isn’t a great idea, and she should probably befriend the other native English speaker so that they can fully understand each other all the time. Mindy, who is considerably more experienced with the nuances of French culture, is also adjusting to something new, which is battling against a mime while singing for tips in the park. It isn’t too surprising that Emily has been using horse hair shampoo, another instance of her thinking she is completely aware of what’s going on and just being that much off that she doesn’t even realize how wrong she is.

Emily in Paris: Season 2, Episode 3 “Bon Anniversaire!” (B+)

An intimate dinner party might have seemed like a fun way for Emily to celebrate her birthday, but it ended up as the perfect opportunity for her relationship with Gabriel to be revealed, which is going to cause her a great deal of stress going forward. Julien seems to have taken over the burden of the working dynamic with Pierre, causing him to miss Emily’s party, but at least it might help smooth things over between him and Emily given the viciousness of their exchange at the office. Sylvie has a better read on how Emily is functioning, telling her that it’s not too late to start smoking, and she threw in a reminder of that offer when Camille came down and screamed at them. Had she not made a big deal about how the pan wasn’t Gabriel’s, Camille might not have put the pieces together and realized that he was the one Emily was having the affair with, per Mathieu’s very informative response to her attempted defense of her former best friend. Things were going much better between Emily and Camille earlier on in the episode, when Emily was uncomfortable around all the topless women at the spa, and I suspect it’s going to take a lot more than Emily’s typical fixes to be able to get Camille to even speak to her again. Living in the same building as Gabriel isn’t going to make that process any easier since they’re bound to run into each other very often.

Emily in Paris: Season 2, Episode 2 “Do You Know the Way to St. Tropez?” (B)

This is hardly the first time that Emily has failed to do the basic research she should have and ended up causing a huge PR mess. Some simple googling could have told her that Grégory wasn’t some friend of Pierre’s and that he was his nemesis, and that might have made her at least think twice about posting the photos of him on the suitcase so gleefully. It was interesting to see Julien swoop in to try to fix it and, for once, communicate with another native French speaker in France. Emily really is clueless, unable to discern whether people were kidding when they said that you’re not allowed to work on weekends in France and completely unaware that she was being mocked by the restaurant owner who didn’t have the spray champagne out when she ordered it. She also had no clue that Sylvie was married and that she was insulting her husband, surely not the last time she’ll make that kind of mistake. Gabriel also isn’t doing himself any favors by calling Emily while Camille is there and in full view of her phone, and Emily is, as she says, most at risk of blabbing about the fact that she slept with him as she’s spending far too much time alone with Camille. Mindy may not be much help with that since she’s distracted by the news that her father was apparently visiting where she was recently, and I suspect we’ll see more of that family in the near future.

What I’m Watching: Emily in Paris (Season Premiere)

Emily in Paris: Season 2, Episode 1 “Voulez-vous coucher avec moi?” (B+)

It’s only been a few months since I finished this show’s first season, almost a full year after it first premiered on Netflix. I enjoy this show as light entertainment, and find it to be very watchable, especially at the end of a long day or after more serious fare. I like that, in this premiere, things have changed in terms of the office dynamic, where Emily isn’t as offended as she should be that Sylvie is continuously trying to cut her out of work since she’s desperately trying to avoid having to spend time with Camille given the fact that she slept with Gabriel when she thought he was leaving and they had broken up for good. She’s now made an enemy in Julien because the client liked her idea better and she had a prototype made up, and she also managed to lose Mathieu because he understood that she was in love with Gabriel. Sylvie’s take on the whole thing is most amusing, and telling Emily that she was getting more French by the moment was actually her form of a compliment. Camille recognizing Gabriel’s pan in Emily’s apartment was the first of what will surely be many such incidents where she comes close to discovering the truth, and fortunately Camille was too distracted by the excitement of Mindy kissing her during the drag show to notice what’s actually going on right in front of her. As long as Ashley Park continues performing show-stopping numbers in eye-popping outfits, her presence on this show will be welcome (Luc will also apparently be pleased). I love that Emily quoted the prime directive to explain her situation to Gabriel and that he took from it that she was the alien. Gabriel was all about pushing limits right from the start with Antoine, and so far it seems to have worked even if it is quite the risky endeavor.
